1 Injured in Wrong-Way Crash Highway 99 Near Atwater Boulevard
ATWATER, CA (June 27, 2022) – A DUI wrong-way crash injured at least one person on Highway 99 near Atwater Boulevard in Atwater.
According to an article published by The Merced Sun Star, the accident took place early Monday. Officers reported the wreck at about 1 a.m.
The incident happened when a 2014 Mercedes sedan was going south in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 from Westside Boulevard.
The car continued traveling the wrong-way in the No. 1 lane of Highway 99, approached Atwater Boulevard and tried to avoid oncoming traffic. In the process, the Mercedes went into an opening within a construction zone.
Multiple Vehicles Collide
The car spun out of control and then slammed into the center median. The California Highway Patrol said four northbound drivers saw the suspect coming and took evasive action.
A three-vehicle chain reaction collision soon happened. Paramedics provided treatment to one of the four victim motorists for their complaint of pain.
The name of the wounded party and their condition at this time were not released. Meanwhile, CHP determined that the driver of the Mercedes was under the influence when the wreck occurred.
They arrested him on suspicion of DUI. Officers forced the northbound lanes of Highway 99 to shut down following the incident.
The Atwater wrong-way crash is still under investigation.
