Elena Maciel-Garcia Identified as Fatal Victim
ATWATER (March 31, 2016)- According to the Merced Sun Star, a deadly DUI crash resulted in the death of a woman Wednesday evening along Highway 140.
Victor Garcia Santos, 29, of Merced was the driver of a Chevy Tahoe who veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla being driven by 67-year-old Elena Maciel-Garcia of Merced.
The 67-year-old woman sadly did not survive the impact of the collision and was confirmed to have died of her injuries at the scene.
Garcia Santos suffered major injuries and was rushed to Modesto Hospital, where he has since undergone surgery. His condition remains unknown at this time.
Authorities interviewed several witnesses who saw the 29-year-old man driving recklessly moments before the crash as he weaved in and out of traffic. He reached speeds estimated to be around 100 mph.
The Merced man was determined to have been under the influence and will face charges of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. Santos has had previous past DUI convictions.
