Austin Jesse Garcia, 21, Suspect in Fatal Redlands Hit-and-Run Crash

REDLANDS, CA (June 1, 2021) – Authorities detained Austin Garcia after a hit-and-run crash that killed a teenage boy in Redlands.

Police identified the 21-year-old San Bernardino man as the suspect in the accident which took place on Sunday, May 30.

The incident began when Austin Jesse Garcia was driving a 2001 Honda Civic at a high rate of speed in Redlands. Police said he missed a curve on Colton Avenue.

The Honda then slammed into a light pole at the intersection with Redlands Boulevard. The Press Enterprise wrote that the wreck occurred at about 2:30 a.m.

The passenger in the Civic, a 16-year-old boy from San Bernardino, died as a result of the collision. Meanwhile, police affirmed that Austin Garcia abandoned his car and fled on foot.

They later found him injured at St. Bernardine’s Hospital in San Bernardino. They arrested him on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and driving under the influence of drugs causing injury or death.

They also booked Austin Garcia into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga for hit-and-run causing injury or death in lieu of $250,000 bail.

The fatal Redlands hit-and-run crash is still under investigation.
