The solo-car accident occurred just before 4:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of 57 Freeway at the Lincoln Avenue off-ramp.
As per the article, California Highway Patrol said 21-year-old Asako Bonkobara was allegedly driving a white 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer at a high rate of speed when she allowed the vehicle to veer to the right.
The Mitsubishi slammed into a metal guardrail which was braced by wooden posts. The car went airborne and subsequently its right side hit a large metal pole supporting a green and white reflective freeway sign.
CHP affirmed that the passenger, 22-year-old Ayumi Nakamura, died at the scene. She was from Hacienda Heights.
Meanwhile, Bonkobara was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center with moderate injuries. The 21-year-old La Habra Heights woman was determined to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time and was then placed under arrest.
We offer our prayers and heartfelt condolences to the friends, and family members of Ayumi Nakamura during such a difficult time.
