Man Killed, Woman Hurt in Gardena Crash; Jonathan Salazar Arrested for DUI
GARDENA, Calif. (Dec. 27, 2019) – Bailey Reyna, 18, has been identified as the passenger who died in a collision early Sunday morning at West Artesia Boulevard and Normandie Avenue in Gardena.
A second person was seriously injured in the 4:41 a.m. collision involving a suspected drunk driver.
The California Highway Patrol issued a Sigalert at 6:02 a.m., police said.
The crash took place when a driver in a black Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution traveling eastbound on Artesia Boulevard crashed into the back of a gray Honda Civic driving in the same direction. The impact pushed the Honda into the intersection where it crashed into a traffic signal in the center median.
A small folding ladder that was in the Honda apparently flew into the back of the head or neck of Bailey Reyna who was sitting in the front passenger seat, police said.
Police say that Bailey Reyna was found lying on the road next to the Honda after the crash. Paramedics responded to the scene, but the teenager did not survive.
Meanwhile, the female driver of the Honda was transported to Harbor UCLA Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.
Jonathan Salazar, 24, of Vista, who was driving the Mitsubishi, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol following the collision. He was booked into jail and held on $100,000 bail.
Witnesses are asked to call Gardena police Traffic investigator Matthew Hassoldt at 310-217-6189 or Sgt. James McCarthy at 310-217-6183.
