Based on the information provided in the report, the company who employs the driver of the gravel truck could potentially be held liable for the collision. A thorough investigation will ensue, however, as photos that were taken of the scene and compiled evidence will help investigators determine the ultimate cause of the collision. Police officials will examine all potential factors including speed, the possible involvement of alcohol or drugs, or whether or not there were any mechanical issues with the vehicle. The investigation will also consist of looking at measurements of evidence left by the vehicles such as point of impact, final resting positions of each vehicle, skid marks, and gouge marks.

In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing may have been a factor, the surviving family members of the victim may be entitled file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of the other vehicle if found responsible for this collision. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for damages including medical expenses and hospital bills, pain and suffering, and funeral costs.
