BAKERSFIELD: Melvin McLaughlin, 81, Killed in DUI Crash at Golden State Highway and 7th Standard Road
Alleged DUI Driver, Alonzo Francisco, and his Passenger, Ashley Patlan, Badly Injured
BAKERSFIELD ( August 2, 2016)- Per the California Highway Patrol, a fatal crash occurred Tuesday morning at the intersection of Golden Chain Highway and 7th Standard Road.
The incident was first reported to police officials at 10:21 a.m.
Officers confirmed two vehicles were involved and described a black Dodge Charger and a second unknown vehicle.
Bakersfield Now provided an update confirming that one of the drivers was under the influence and caused the crash by running a red light.
In a report by The Bakersfield Californian, CHP said 30-year-old Alonzo Francisco was traveling west on 7th Standard Road when he struck a Toyota Prius driven by 81-year-old Melvin McLaughlin.
McLaughlin was pronounced dead at the scene. Prior to the wreck, the 81-year-old man had been stopped southbound on Golden State Avenue before entering the intersection with 7th Standard.
Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Francisco and his 30-year-old passenger, Ashley Patlan, were both transported to Kern Medical Center with major injuries.
Francisco was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
