California Highway Patrol said the initial accident occurred about 8:45 a.m., north of Highway 99.
A 50-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman from Manteca died in that wreck. They were identified as 50 year-old Miguel Angel Irigoyen and 35-year-old Altagracia Gutierrez.
Irigoyen was the driving the vehicle at the time while Gutierrez was his passenger. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Subsequently, a tractor-trailer struck the two vehicles involved, prompting at least 12 other crashes which involved 20 or more vehicles.
Several people were hurt, at least one was confirmed to have suffered injuries described as major. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
