BARSTOW, Calif. (August 10, 2022) — Bedford Moering, 58, died in a Barstow pedestrian accident on West Main Street after a driver reportedly struck the person.

The deadly crash occurred about 10:06 a.m. on August 6th, according to the Victor Valley News.

The drivers of a white Honda Accord and a gray Dodge Challenger were allegedly engaged in a “speed contest.”  The Honda allegedly struck the victim crossing the roadway. The vehicle, driven by Dean Laney, 24, of Barstow, also rear-ended a blue Ford Escape.

Paramedics transported Dean Laney by ambulance to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center to treat his injuries.

2 Arrested Manslaughter Charges Barstow Accident

Additionally, officials from the Barstow Police Department arrested both Dean Laney and the driver from the Dodge later identified as Manuel Zapata, 22, of Barstow.

Manuel Zapata reportedly left the scene, but police located him through witness statements, the license plate number and video surveillance.

Both Dean Laney and Manuel Zapata are facing vehicular manslaughter charges for the death of Bedford Moering. Additionally, Manuel Zapata is also facing hit-and-run charges for leaving the scene.

Investigators booked Manuel Zapata at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s High Desert Detention Center.

When Laney was discharged from Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, the Colton Police Department booked him at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s West Valley Detention Center.
