Berenice Cortez Pineda, 47; and Ricardo Gonzalez, 48, Critically Injured in Crash
SANTA MARGARITA, CA (April 17, 2022) – A DUI crash on Highway 101 left Berenice Cortez Pineda and Ricardo Gonzalez critically injured near Santa Margarita.
The Tribune and Noozhawk News wrote that the fatal collision took place on Saturday night, April 16. The California Highway Patrol reported the accident at around 8 p.m.
The incident happened when Berenice Cortez Pineda, 47, was driving a Chevrolet Cruze with Ricardo Gonzalez, 48, north on Highway 101 near Santa Margarita.
She then pulled over and parked on the asphalt shoulder. At the same time, a Chevy Suburban was traveling in excess of 65 mph in the same direction.
The Suburban spun out of control, veered across the right lane and then went onto the shoulder. In the process, the car slammed into the rear of the Cruze.
2 Women Killed in Wreck
The impact sent the Cruze flying about 120 feet. CHP said the vehicle spun counter-clockwise, just south of the Santa Barbara Road exit ramp.
Berenice Pineda, Ricardo Gonzalez, and a 3-year-old girl sustained critical injuries as a result of the crash. Paramedics rushed them to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo for treatment.
The two women riding as rear passengers in the Cruze died following the wreck. Meanwhile, medical personnel took the driver of the Suburban to a hospital with minor wounds.
CHP determined that the man was under the influence of alcohol when he struck the other car. They soon arrested him on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI.
The incident is still under investigation.
