City of Encinitas Bicycle Accidents
Bicycle accidents involving motorists are common in the city of Encinitas.
Even in locations such as this one where there are marked bicycle lanes. Many drivers are distracted or they run traffic lights or speed without concern for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Roughly one mile from this bicycle accident, a 15-year-old boy lost his life on Santa Fe Drive just over a year ago. His death brought attention to the growing number of bicycle collisions in the area.
In response to public outcry, the City of Encinitas declared a local state of emergency for cyclists as well as pedestrians, and those using motorized mobility devices.
The $4 million Santa Fe Drive Corridor Improvements Project aimed to make the area safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and bus riders. However, while some streets were upgraded, traffic flow for vehicles in the area seems worse. Last month, the completion of the project was put on hold.
There will always be a mismatch between cyclists and motorists as long as they both share the road, but hopefully these safety measures will have a positive impact.
Finally, if you happened to witness the New Year’s Day bicycle accident I was discussing, or have dashcam or surveillance footage of the incident, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at (760) 966-3555.
