Bicyclist Julian Rodriguez, 76, of Yucaipa Killed in Car Accident
YUCAIPA, California (November 13, 2014) — Julian Rodriguez, 76, of Yucaipa was killed Sunday afternoon when he was hit by a driver while riding his bicycle near the intersection of 7th Street and Parkside Lane, according to bikinginla.com.
The fatal bicycle accident was reported about 3:30 p.m. Police say Rodriguez was riding on the right shoulder near the intersection when he allegedly made a sudden turn in front of a car and was hit. Paramedics responded to the crash and transported Rodriguez by ambulance to a nearby hospital, but he later died.
Antoinette Lavanway, 56, of Yucaipa, the driver of the Hyundai who struck the rider, was questioned by police. It’s unclear, however, whether there were witnesses to the accident.
The fatal accident is under investigation by the Yucaipa sheriff’s station’s Major Accident Investigation Team. Witnesses are asked to contact police at 909-918-2305.
San Bernardino County Bicycle Accident Statistics
There were seven bicyclists killed and 393 injured in traffic accidents in San Bernardino County, according to the 2012 statistics compiled by the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Report. Overall, 217 people died in collisions and 7,942 were injured in 2012 in the county, the report said.
