The crash took place about 1:36 am. this morning, the victim’s bicycle was found laying at the intersection. The report does not state whether or not the person who died was riding the bike or walking with it. Firefighters and police responded to the scene to help those involved, but the victim died of their injuries at the scene.
Witnesses told police they saw the vehicle hit the pedestrian and then stop and park their vehicle about a block from the crash site. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lakewood office is heading up the investigation into the crash.
When a fatal collision involves a bicyclist, police will interview all other parties involved and try to piece together what happened based on their side of the story, witness accounts and evidence at the scene. It’s important to have an independent investigator conduct a secondary investigation into what happened. While criminal charges could be filed if there were drugs and or alcohol involved, a victim or their family must separately make a claim for a civil lawsuit. This would compensate them for financial losses such as medical bills and loss of income.
