CLOVIS, California (April 20, 2016) — A man in his 40s riding a bicycle was killed when he was struck by a car early Wednesday morning at Shaw and Leonard avenues in Fresno County, according to ABC News 30.
The Clovis Police Department responded to the scene about 6 a.m. this morning. Police say the man was riding in the bicycle lane and both people were traveling eastbound. The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.
Bicyclists are some of the most vulnerable people on the roadway. Motorists are required under California laws to provide a 3-foot space between them as they pass a rider to ensure their safety. The investigation into the fatal crash will likely look into how the bicycle was struck and whether there was any way this tragedy could have been avoided.
