Scooter Injury Accidents Abound in Santa Monica
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (June 13, 2018) — Renting an electric scooter in Santa Monica to get around quickly without walking has become a hit among tourists and locals alike.
Santa Monica-based Bird Rides Inc., a local scooter ride-share company, is one of several new companies giving pedestrians a cheap and fun ride to explore the Santa Monica area. However, this environmentally-friendly mode of transportation is not without mishaps such as faulty equipment or falls due to uneven pavement.
Indeed, riders can travel at speeds of up to 15 mph on sidewalks, boardwalks and streets in this area where they share walkways and roads with pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles. Accidents are just waiting to happen as riders navigate through dense pedestrian-clogged sidewalks and boardwalks or dodge traffic at intersections. Some problems reported include faulty brakes or tires, abandoned scooters, collisions between pedestrians and scooter riders and car accidents. Many of the riders are also not wearing helmets or are under 18 years old when they rent the bike.
“Not only can the scooter rider get hurt, but they can cause injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists in a collision,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Falls or collisions involving scooters can result in fractured bones, head injuries, concussions and more.”
These ride-sharing scooter companies recently began appearing throughout the United States a year ago. Customers who wish to take one for a ride can unlock them using a smartphone. The cost is typically about a dollar plus 15 cents per minute to rent.
Although riders are required by the company to sign a waiver to assume the risk of injury, the waiver cannot protect the company from a gross negligence claim brought by an injured person, Johnson said.
