Truck Overturns after Driver Avoids Hitting German Shepherd Dog on Freeway

BELLFLOWER, Calif. (Jan. 5, 2026) — A traffic collision involving an overturned box truck and a car happened Monday on the eastbound 91 Freeway in Bellflower after a driver reportedly swerved to avoid a German Shepherd running in the HOV lane, authorities said.

The incident was reported on Jan. 5th shortly after 9 a.m. on eastbound State Route 91 just west of the Bellflower on-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol. Initial reports indicated a box truck overturned after attempting to avoid a large dog running in the traffic lanes.

CHP logs described a brown German shepherd moving against traffic in the carpool lane, prompting multiple drivers to brake abruptly. A second vehicle was also involved in the collision, and at least one vehicle was left on its side, blocking several lanes.

By about 9:12 a.m., all eastbound lanes were temporarily stopped as fire crews responded and multiple lanes, including the HOV and fast lanes, were blocked. Authorities confirmed there was no fire, but debris and disabled vehicles required emergency response and traffic control.

Tow services were requested to clear the overturned truck, and Los Angeles County Fire Department units assisted at the scene. No immediate information was released regarding injuries.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and it was unclear what happened to the dog.
