Boy on E-Bike Injured in Crash on Del Mar Heights Road, Carmel Valley

CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (May 13, 2026) — A 12-year-old boy riding an electric bicycle is being treated for major injuries after he was hit by a driver in a Tesla SUV on Saturday on Del Mar Heights Road in Carmel Valley.

The bicycle versus car accident happened around 5:40 p.m. on May 10th in the 5500 block of Del Mar Heights Road, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Traffic investigators reported the boy was riding his e-bike westbound in a bike lane before the collision. However, he was hit by the oncoming vehicle as he tried to make a left turn onto southbound Old Carmel Valley Road. The bike crashed into the passenger side of the westbound 2023 Tesla Model Y.

Paramedics responded and transported the injured boy to a hospital for treatment of multiple brain hemorrhages that required surgery and a broken collarbone.

Meanwhile, the 64-year-old man driving the Tesla stopped and cooperated with authorities.
