IRVINE, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2022)  –  Boyue Huang, 19, of Irvine, died Monday at the hospital six days after being struck on his electric scooter by a suspected DUI driver at Barranca Parkway and Red Hill Avenue.

The collision occurred about 9:07 p.m. on Sept. 6th, according to the Irvine Police Department.

The teenager was riding a MiniMotors Speedway Nano Pro electric scooter when a driver in a black Hyundai sedan crashed into him. The teen struck the windshield and the scooter wound up underneath the car, according to County News Service.

Paramedics rushed the teen to a hospital where he was treated for undisclosed major injuries. Sadly, Boyue Huang died at the hospital on Sept. 12th.

Meanwhile, police arrested Rhett Joseph Zerboni, 37, of Anaheim, on suspicion of DUI. The Anaheim man is being held without bail in the Orange County Jail. It is not the man’s first brush with the law. Two years ago, he was arrested after an altercation involving charges including arson, vandalism and falsifying a registration license plate tab, according to the Orange County District Attorney.

Investigators continue to piece together what led to the crash, but they believe the alcohol and or drugs were a factor.

Witnesses may contact Detective Chris Ostrowski at (949) 724-7047 or [email protected].

The teenage boy worked at Apóla Greek Grill in Irvine. The store honored the young man’s memory and closed on Tuesday, Sept. 12th to give staff time grieve his loss.
