Hit-and-run Suspect Arrested After Deadly Pedestrian Accident

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Sept. 7, 2023) — Brandon Allen Janik, 37, has been arrested on charges that he fled the scene of a fatal pedestrian accident in June that killed Joshua Gilliland at Normal Street in University Heights.

Police arrested the suspect on various charges including murder on Tuesday in the 3800 block of Seventh Avenue in Hillcrest, according to the Times of San Diego.

The hit-and-run crash occurred around 8:45 p.m. on June 10th, roughly a mile north of Balboa Park in San Diego County, according to the San Diego Police Department. Brandon Janik was allegedly driving eastbound on Normal Street in a 2022 BMW. He reportedly drove through a red traffic light and struck the victim in a crosswalk at the intersection before fleeing the scene. Paramedics responded and transported 47-year-old Joshua Gilliland to a hospital where he died four days later, police said.

Investigators have been piecing together what happened and determined that the suspect in the deadly crash was Brandon Janik, according to news reports.

Authorities booked the suspect into San Diego Central Jail on the morning of Sept. 5th. He is being held without bail while he awaits arraignment on Thursday, Sept. 7th. The charges against him include murder, drunk driving, hit-and-run, gross vehicular manslaughter, as well as three counts of making false insurance claims about a vehicle.
