Motorcyclist Killed in Crash Near Vina
TEHAMA COUNTY, Calif. (June 7, 2023) — Brian James Smith, 47, of Corning, died Saturday in a motorcycle accident involving a car on South Avenue in Corning, in Tehama County.
The two-vehicle collision occurred around 2 p.m. on June 3rd, according to the California Highway Patrol‘s Red Bluff station.
The motorcyclist was traveling westbound on a 2019 Harley Davidson motorcycle. He had just crossed the Sacramento River over Woodson Bridge when a driver in an eastbound green 1998 Buick reportedly made a left-hand turn at Gardiner Ferry Road, the Corning Observer reports. Driver Joseph M. Russo, 87, of Corning, turned directly into the path of the motorcycle, police said.
The motorcyclist tried to avoid the collision, but crashed into the right front of the Buick. He was ejected from the bike and it landed in the westbound lane.
Paramedics responded, but they were unable to save the motorcyclist who died at the scene. He was later identified as Brian James Smith.
Meanwhile, the elderly driver from the Buick suffered minor injuries and was treated by medical crews.
Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The collision remains under investigation.
