3 Killed, 5 Injured in Fremont Crash; Alleged Drugged Driver Arrested
FREMONT, Calif. (May 16, 2018) — Dang Nguyen Hai Tran, 21, of San Jose was allegedly driving recklessly and speeding Tuesday night before crashing into several vehicles and killing two children and a woman on the Interstate 880 Freeway, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
The San Jose man was arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana and now police are piecing together what led to the crash that killed three and injured five others.
Christy Limas, 14, and Brooke Limas, 9, were identified as two of the three people who died in the crash. The third victim is a 39-year-old Noelle Johnson. All three are from Manteca, California.
Police say that Dang Nguyen Hai Tran was driving his white Toyota Camry about 9:30 p.m. last night when it collided with a Cadillac Escalade occupied by eight people. The SUV overturned and ejected the three victims who died. Five others were in the SUV including four juveniles who were hospitalized. Three other vehicles were also involved in the crash. The youngest victim was an infant who suffered major injuries in the collision.
The crash happened on northbound I-880, at the Auto Mall Parkway near Stevenson Boulevard. Police closed down the freeway overnight to investigate the collision and its cause.
Dang Nguyen Hai Tran faces multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter and is being held on $195,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear at the Alameda County Courthouse on Thursday afternoon.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of those who died in this collision as they cope with such tragedy.
Fatal Accident Investigation
Police are reviewing the evidence and trying to determine what exactly led to the crash. At this time, we know that the driver of the Toyota has been arrested on drugged driving charges. Aside from these criminal charges, a civil lawsuit may be filed against the at-fault driver. These facts of course are still under investigation.
