Navy Service Man Killed; 5 Injured Camp Pendleton Crash
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (March 2, 2021) — A Camp Pendleton collision left a Navy service member dead and five others injured Tuesday on the Interstate 5 Freeway.
Aaron Michael Fish, 26, an active-duty member of the US Navy stationed in Oxnard, identified as the man who died. The San Diego Medical Examiner released his name on their website.
The collision happened just before 7 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Five military trucks were traveling in a convoy southbound on the I-5 Freeway, just south of Basilone Road.
For unknown reasons, the convoy slowed down and a chain-reaction crash ensued.
A truck trailers got pushed into the vehicle’s cab. The 26-year-old Navy service member who was driving it was killed, according to ABC 10 News San Diego.
Also, the injured were two women and three other men. They are also Navy service members and all are in their early 20s. One of the injured suffered serious injuries. Emergency responders rushed the person and four others to Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital and Mission Hospital in Orange County for treatment.
Authorities responding to the scene were CHP Oceanside, Camp Pendleton Fire Department, U.S. Marine Corps Camp Pendleton, and U.S. Marine Corps Criminal Investigations.
Investigators closed down the two right lanes of southbound I-5 Freeway.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Equipment Operator 3rd Class Aaron Fish. The young man enlisted in the Navy on March 29th, 2018 and is from Tully, New York. He was a Seabee who served with the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 5 at Port Hueneme in Ventura. Also, he was meritoriously promoted to Petty Officer 3rd Class just recently.
