UPDATED: Car Hits 22 People in Academy Running Group
SOUTH WHITTIER, Calif. (Nov. 16, 2022) — A driver struck a group of recruits from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Training Academy who were running along Mills Avenue Wednesday in South Whittier.
The crash occurred about 6:28 a.m. on Nov. 16th in front of 10612 Mills Avenue, near the sheriff’s STARS Explorer Academy, according to the California Highway Patrol.
It’s unknown why the gray SUV crashed into the group of recruits before it hit a pole on Mills Avenue between Trumball Street and Bentongrove Drive.
Roughly five people suffered major injuries including one with head trauma, broken bones, and one person that lost of limb. Also, four others had moderate injuries and more than a dozen others were treated for minor injuries,
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Office initially reported five runners from their academy were struck, but then updated it to 22 people. Sheriff’s deputies called the Los Angeles County Fire Department to send more than a dozen ambulances to the scene to help those injured.
It’s unknown at this time how many were taken to a hospital.
Police arrested the 22-year-old Diamond Bar man driving the involved gray SUV, possibly a Honda CRV, following the crash.
The injured recruits were in the eighth week of their 22-week training program.
Investigators are working on the case.
