California Highway Patrol officer said a 1997 Toyota Highlander rolled over and landed on its side about 12:30 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway, south of Carlsbad Village Drive.
As per the article, CHP affirmed that the 23-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the back seat, was ejected from the SUV during the collision. The female victim and six other occupants in the vehicle were transported to the hospital where the 23-year-old later succumbed to her injuries.
CBS 8 reported that the driver of the Toyota may have fallen asleep at the wheel when the wreck occurred.
The name of the deceased has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, the extent of the injuries the patients sustained and their condition were not immediately known.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
