Carol Aguirre ID’d as Homeless Woman Ran Over by Tractor
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (Sept. 30, 2020) — Carol Ann Aguirre, 68, was run over and killed by a Caterpillar tractor Monday morning while she was sleeping on the beach at Oceanside Harbor at 1200 block of North Pacific Street.
The victim had been lying on the sand about 10 a.m. when a Caterpillar tractor operated by Manson Construction Co. crushed her as it conducted work on behalf of the city of Oceanside.
A couple of lifeguards witnessed the tragedy as it happened. Police stated that the tractor was removing a dredge pipe from the beach. The driver was traveling across the sand when the driver felt a bump and stopped. That’s when the tractor driver discovered the woman had been run over on the sand.
John Daniels, who operates LTR Surf instruction and a rental business nearby on the beach, told authorities he recorded the brief encounter as he suspected the woman was homeless and may have needed some help.
The short video was shot at 9:48 a.m. just minutes before the fatal collision. The woman was lying on her side, facing the ocean and a city worker in a golf cart was speaking to her and offered her some water.
Manson Construction Co., the company operating the tractor for the dredging project, issued a statement that they are devastated about the woman’s death.
The company, and possibly the city of Oceanside, will likely be held accountable for the woman’s death. A full investigation into liability is underway.
Sadly, this is not the first time someone has been run over on a San Diego County beach. A 58-year-old sunbather was killed back in 1981 when a lifeguard vehicle ran over him at Black’s Beach in La Jolla.
Later in 1985, two other people died just after midnight when a vehicle ran over them on a beach just north of Imperial Beach. Also, in 2002, a 27-year-old sunbather was run over by a lifeguard truck on an Oceanside beach, but she survived the incident. Two separate incidents involving lifeguard trucks running over people were reported in 2011. One was a 3-year-old girl who was struck at Pacific Beach and the other was a woman sunbathing at Torrey Pines State Beach.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman.
