SANTA ROSA, California (June 14, 2017) — Kevin Scott Thorpe, 39, of Rohnert Park, a 14-year employee at Hanna Boys Center where he was a counselor and youth minister, has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenager between 2006 and 2011 at the Catholic center for at-risk youth where he was working.
He is being held in the Sonoma County Jail on $300,000 bail and faces charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and sexual assault of a minor. Specifically, Thorpe is accused of three counts of oral copulation by force during a one-year period committed under duress or by fear.
According to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department, Thorpe committed these sexual assault crimes on the teenager who was housed at the Sonoma Valley facility and police believe there could be more victims. The sexual crimes took place on campus as well as at Thorpe’s home in Sonoma Valley.
The accuser, who is now 23 years old, had not previously reported the crimes because he didn’t want to be expelled from the boys home. However, now he is an adult, the victim wanted to stop his abuser from harming other boys and reported the crime to police around June 1st. Thorpe was arrested at his home on Saturday.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department is asking other victims or witnesses to come forward by calling them at 707-565-4300.
The Hanna Boys Center has been tied to sexual abuse claims in the past. Angelica Malinski, a 22-year-old female counselor at the center, was fired about six months ago after it was discovered she allegedly had sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old male housed at the facility last fall. The incident allegedly took place on the grounds of the Hanna Boys Center.
Additionally, the Hanna Boys Center is facing a whistle blower lawsuit from Timothy Norman, a clinical director who made numerous complaints to operators of the 70-year-old home about not protecting children under their care from acts of bullying. The claims were denied by the Hanna Boys Center.
