FONTANA, Calif. July 12, 2023) — Cayetano Garcia, 55, of Palmdale, died on July 6th in a collision on the Cherry Avenue on-ramp to the Interstate 10 Freeway in Fontana.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred around 5:04 p.m. in the western Fontana area, according to the Fontana Police Department.
The Palmdale man was traveling in a white Toyota pickup truck northbound across Slover Avenue, according to the Fontana Herald News. The driver of the vehicle reportedly made a sharp turn in an eastward direction and hit the eastern concrete K-rail. The truck also allegedly sideswiped two other motorists who were stopped at a red traffic light at the entrance and exit from the eastbound I-10 Freeway.
However, the Toyota pickup truck continued northbound and eventually rear-ended a flatbed trailer that was being towed behind a semi-truck. The semi-truck was also stopped at the red light as its driver waited to enter the eastbound I-10 Freeway on-ramp.
Cayetano Garcia, who was traveling in the Toyota pickup, died at the scene of the collision, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner. The Fontana Herald News report stated he was the driver of the Toyota, but the coroner report stated he was a passenger in the pickup truck.
The Toyota driver may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the collision, according to news reports.
The case remains under investigation.
