Celene Reducindo, 47, and Maria Hernandez, 54, Killed in Santa Margarita Crash
SANTA MARGARITA, CA (April 17, 2022) – A DUI crash killed Celene Reducindo and Maria Hernandez on Highway 101 near Santa Margarita.
The coroner’s office identified the two Santa Maria women as victims of the fatal wreck which took place on Saturday.
The incident happened when Maria Hernandez and Celene Reducindo were riding as passengers of a Chevrolet Cruze going north on Highway 101 near Santa Margarita.
The California Highway Patrol said their car pulled over and stopped on the asphalt shoulder just south of the Santa Barbara Road exit ramp. At the same time, a Chevy Suburban was traveling in excess of 65 mph northbound.
The Suburban spun out of control, drifted across the right lane and then onto the shoulder. In the process, the vehicle struck the rear of the Cruze.
4 Injured in Highway 101 Wreck
The Cruze propelled about 120 feet and spun counter-clockwise due to the impact of the collision. The Tribune and Noozhawk News wrote that the accident occurred on April 16 at around 8 p.m.
Maria Hernandez, 54, and Celene Reducindo, 47, died as a result of the crash. The driver and the two other occupants of the Cruze survived with critical injuries.
Paramedics rushed them to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo for treatment. The man driving the Suburban ended up hospitalized with minor wounds.
CHP determined that he was under the influence of alcohol when he hit the victims. They soon arrested him on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony DUI.
The wreck is still under investigation.
