Celso Rojas, 20, Suspect in Fatal Escondido DUI Crash
ESCONDIDO, CA (November 18, 2020) – Authorities identified Celso Rojas as the DUI driver in a crash that killed an elderly motorist in Escondido.
Officers determined that the 20-year-old man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the fatal wreck on September 25.
The incident began when Celso Solano Rojas tried to pass traffic on Centre City Parkway. He then hit another vehicle head-on at the intersection with Tierra Libertia Road.
According to the FOX 5 News, paramedics responded to the scene and found the other driver with major injuries following the collision. The wreck took place at about 8 p.m.
Richard Woolsey, 85, Victim in Head-On Collision
Medical personnel took the victim to a hospital where he died two days after. Officials named him as 85-year-old Richard Woolsey, of Escondido.
Rojas was also transported to be treated for unspecified injuries. Authorities soon arrested and charged him with gross vehicular manslaughter.
He is facing three counts of DUI causing injury and misdemeanor of driving without a license. He is also facing an infraction for driving with a measurable blood-alcohol content while under age 21.
They set his bail at $250,000. Meanwhile, records showed that he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
