1 Killed, 2 Badly Injured in Chico Crash on Highway 99 Near Cana
CHICO, CA (March 7, 2023) – A crash killed one person and badly injured two others on Highway 99 near Cana Highway north of Chico.
According to The Enterprise Record and KRCRTV News, the tragic accident took place on Tuesday afternoon. Officers reported the wreck on March 7 at around 3 p.m.
The incident began when a silver Toyota sedan was going northbound on Highway 99 near Cana Highway north of Chico. At the same time, a big rig was traveling south.
For an unknown reason, the sedan drifted into oncoming traffic and hit the left side of the semi-truck. In the process, the rear axle of the big rig’s trailer became detached and traveled into the northbound lane.
The California Highway Patrol said the axle then collided with a red Toyota pickup truck. The pickup truck rolled onto its side on the right shoulder of Highway 99, north of Cana.
Big Rig, Cars Collide
The impact pushed the axle back into the southbound lane where it struck a silver Honda sedan. Firefighters arrived at the scene and freed two trapped occupants from the wreckage.
The 52-year-old Chico woman driving the sedan sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. The motorist in the pickup and the driver of the big rig survived with moderate injuries.
Paramedics rushed at least two of the patients to the hospital for treatment. The reports confirmed that the woman soon died.
The names of the deceased and wounded parties have not been yet released. Meanwhile, CHP added that two of the vehicles ended up totaled while the other two obtained minor damage.
Officers forced the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 99 to shut down for hours near Cana following the wreck. The cause of the fatal Chico crash is still under investigation.
