CHINO, California (July 1, 2014) — A 79-year-old bicyclist was hit by a pickup truck and died Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Central and Washington avenues, according to a dispatch by the California Highway Patrol.
Paramedics rushed to the scene of the bicycle accident and transported Manuel Vera Ortega to Chino Valley Medical Center where he died roughly an hour after the crash just before 1 p.m.
The driver of the silver 2013 Chevy Silverado who struck the bicyclist was identified as William Parkison, 73, of Chino, police said.
Police are heading up an investigation into the crash to determine liability. Witnesses are asked to contact police at 909-628-1234.
“Our bicyclists are among the most vulnerable people sharing the roads,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Motorists need to pass at a safe distance and under new California laws, beginning in September they are required to pass at least 3 feet away from bicyclists.”
