CHIRIACO SUMMIT, California (Tuesday, January 12, 2016) – A tractor-trailer truck was struck by a sedan on westbound Interstate 10 Freeway, east of Summit Road. The big rig had jack-knifed and the driver had gotten out of the cab when he was hit by the car. The victim was pinned between the two vehicles for over an hour before paramedics could cut him free. An air-ambulance then took him to Mercy Hospital for medical care.
Debris from the collision covered the roadway, creating a traffic hazard and requiring the lanes to be temporarily shutdown.
The incident took place this evening at about 10:16 p.m., according to an incident report by the California Highway Patrol, Indio. It took two hours to remove the wreckage from the lanes.
