California Highway Patrol Issued 16,000 Tickets for Speeding
CALIFORNIA, Calif. (Sept. 4, 2024) — By now, the 1,140 drivers who were arrested for drunk driving over the Labor Day weekend have sobered up and are facing reality.
Their decision to drive under the influence will cost them between $8,000 and $25,000, depending on the circumstances.
For example, fines start at $390 and can reach $20,000 and court costs are roughly three times the amount of the fine.
A first-time offender may be required to attend a two-hour program for about $200, but a repeat offender could pay $3,000 for a 30-month program.
Also, drivers can expect insurance rates to go up by around 185 percent a year after a DUI conviction.
Overall, the DUI arrested made this year over Labor Day weekend were up by 76 arrests to 1,140 versus 1,064 arrests made in 2023 by the CHP.
However, the families of the 43 people who died are facing a much worse future without their family member due to a fatal crash this past weekend.
The toll of the families of those who died is unimaginable.
California Highway Patrol officers also issued roughly 28,000 citations to drivers breaking the law.
About 16,000 were for excessive speed and 500 of those were given to drivers caught speeding at 100 mph or higher.
Finally, there were 851 citations for seatbelt violations and 1,731 for distracted driving.
