Police Cracked Down on Motorists Breaking the Law
CALIFORNIA (July 10, 2024) – It was a busy Fourth of July holiday for California Highway Patrol officers this year and they have 1,300 DUI arrests to prove if.
The CHP also handed out 30,000 citations to drivers over the Independence Day weekend including 17,000 for excessive speed and 600 who were exceeding 100 mph.
Police stepped up patrols during the maximum enforcement period over the Fourth of July holiday in California.
Roughly 40,000 people were cited or arrested for breaking the law and police came through “to ensure the safety of all Californians.”
Here are the highlights from the Fourth of July holiday weekend
- Roughly 1,600 arrests; 1,300 DUIs
- Almost 30,000 citations; 17,000 for excessive speed
- More than 600 citations speeding above 100 miles per hour
- About 1,000 citations for seatbelt violations
- 1,900-plus distracted driving citations
Traffic accidents were not the only cause of injuries over the holiday.
A 10-year-old Laguna Hills boy suffered severe injuries when a firework exploded in his hand in San Juan Capistrano on the day after the Fourth of July.
Edther Ocampo and his brother Dominic, 11, lit a firework they found near the train tracks. The device exploded in his hand and he lost three fingers and part of a fourth on his left hand.
The child also had abdominal burn, burst eardrums, burns and multiple internal injuries to his organs. His older brother was also injured.
