CHP Officer and Motorcyclist Injured in San Diego Crash on Interstate 5
SAN DIEGO, CA (August 31, 2021) – A crash injured a CHP officer and a motorcyclist on the Interstate 5 in San Diego near Del Mar.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune and ABC 10 News, the accident took place on Tuesday afternoon. Officers reported the collision at about 4:20 p.m.
The incident began when a California Highway Patrol officer stopped his vehicle in the center median of the Interstate 5 to remove a ladder.
The CHP officer took the hazardous object out of the far-left southbound lane of the Interstate 5. At the same time, the rider of a 2000 Harley-Davidson lost control of his motorcycle for an unknown reason.
Motorcycle Rider Hits Officer Near Del Mar
The motorcyclist swerved left, slammed into the concrete center divider and then hit the officer. The accident occurred near Via De La Valle and Lomas Santa Fe Drive.
The CHP officer sustained minor to moderate injuries as a result of the crash. The 61-year-old man riding the bike suffered serious injuries upon impact.
Firefighters along with the paramedics soon arrived at the scene and rushed them to hospitals for treatment. Officials did not release the names of the wounded parties and their condition at this time.
Meanwhile, CHP forced the two left lanes of the Interstate 5 to shut down for more than four hours following the collision. The cause of the San Diego crash is still under investigation.
