CHP Officer Badly Injured in Crash with Suspected DUI Motorist
BERKELEY, Calif. (May 25, 2022) — A CHP officer was critically injured Tuesday morning following a Berkeley hit-and-run collision with a suspected DUI driver on the Interstate 80 Freeway.
The traffic accident occurred about 12:45 a.m. on May 24th on the eastbound side of the I-80, just west of University Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said.
Jimmy Jimenez, 21, of Vacaville, was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck in the far right lane allegedly sideswiped the CHP officer’s patrol vehicle. Two CHP police officers had stopped to help a driver with a disabled vehicle. The pickup truck also struck the officer who was outside the vehicle, police said. The second officer was inside the patrol vehicle and not injured.

Additionally, the driver in the Dodge failed to stop following the collision. Police later located the pickup truck on the right shoulder of I-80 Freeway at the Pinole Valley Road exit. They also found the driver asleep in the driver’s seat of the Dodge. The Vacaville man was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run, the CHP said in a statement. Jimenez was arrested and taken to Santa Rita Jail where he was held in lieu of $95,000 bail, according to jail records.
Finally, the Berkeley hit-and-run crash remains under investigation by the CHP. Witnesses may contact the CHP at 510-457-2875.
