CHP Weekend Blitz: What Drivers Need to Know
Speeding is more than just a traffic violation—it’s one of the leading causes of injury and death on California roads. This weekend, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is taking aim at this dangerous behavior with a statewide Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, June 7 and ending 5:59 a.m. Sunday, June 8.
During the MEP, CHP officers will significantly increase patrols to crack down on excessive speeding and unsafe driving. The initiative comes in response to alarming statistics:
- Speeding is a factor in nearly 30% of crashes in California.
- Last year, over 116,000 crashes were attributed to unsafe speed.
- Those crashes resulted in nearly 500 fatalities and more than 48,000 injuries.
- In 2024 alone, CHP issued 243,000 speed-related citations, including 47,000 for drivers going over 100 mph.
