California Highway Patrol Steps Up Enforcement on Christmas Eve and Day
CALIFORNIA, (Dec. 24, 2024) — Tonight, starting at 6 p.m., CHP officers will crackdown on drunk driving with more patrols on California highways for the next 30 hours.
The California Highway Patrol‘s maximum enforcement period aims to remove DUI drivers and those who are speeding or reckless from roads and make them safer for other motorists. All available CHP officers will be working over the holiday.
Motorists often make bad decisions while celebrating over the holiday, but police will be out there to take them off the road before they impact others.
“The three main causes of injury and death on California roadways are speed, alcohol, and failure to wear a seat belt,” said Attorney James Johnson. “Holiday driving results in more people on our roads, which unfortunately means more people get hurt.”
Last year, 20 people died in crashes throughout California in the CHP jurisdiction. Also, CHP officers arrested more than 900 motorists statewide on suspicion of driving under the influence compared to 639 in 2022. The higher number of arrests was due to the 2023 campaign spanning a full three days and nights as Christmas fell on a Monday.
This year it’s a midweek enforcement campaign and it’s much shorter.
CHP officers will also conduct a maximum enforcement period for New Year’s Eve.
