Chris Witherspoon, 25, ID’d as Suspect in Monterey Fatal DUI Wrong-Way Crash
MONTEREY, CA (May 7, 2023) – Authorities detained Chris Witherspoon after a fatal DUI wrong-way crash on Highway 1 in Monterey.
The California Highway Patrol determined that the 25-year-old Hope Mills, North Carolina man was under the influence when the wreck occurred on Saturday.
The incident began when Chris Witherspoon was driving a Toyota Camry north in the southbound lanes of Highway 1 in Monterey. At the same time, a Mitsubishi was traveling south.
Man, 69, Killed in Wreck
CHP said he then struck the Mitsubishi head-on near Highway 68. Both cars obtained heavy damage and came to a stop in the middle of the road as a result of the collision.
The KRON 4 News and KSBW News wrote that the accident took place on May 6 at around 3:45 a.m. The reports confirmed that the driver of the Mitsubishi, a 69-year-old man, died at the scene.
The name of the deceased victim has not been yet released pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, CHP arrested Chris Witherspoon for DUI following the crash.
Officers soon booked the wrong-way motorist into the Monterey County Jail. The cause of the Monterey DUI crash is still under investigation.
