Police Searching for Hit-and-run Driver in Pickup that Killed Bicyclist
CROCKETT, Calif. (July 25, 2018) — Bicyclist Christopher Bunag, 42, of Hercules, was struck and killed Tuesday night by a hit-and-run driver in a pickup truck in the 2000 block of San Pablo Avenue, just west of Dowrello Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
UPDATE: Police have arrested Kylie Derksen, 28, of Martinez, on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
The crash took place about 7:20 p.m. last night. The driver in the dark-colored pickup fled the scene without stopping to help the bicyclist who died at the scene. The vehicle likely has major front-end damage and police are hoping the public can help them locate the suspect.
Police say both the bicyclist and the pickup truck had been traveling westbound on San Pablo Avenue approaching Merchant Street near The Dead Fish restaurant. Bunag was ahead of the driver when he was struck from behind and thrown off the bicycle. Despite wearing all the necessary safety equipment, the bicyclist was not able to survive his injuries.
Witnesses or anyone with information about the suspect are strongly urged to call the CHP’s Contra Costa office at 925-646-4980.
