MODESTO, Calif. (Sept. 8, 2021) — Clavey Carlson, 25, of Modesto, died Tuesday night after his car rear-ended a trailer being pulled by a van on McHenry Avenue.
The young man was driving southbound on McHenry Avenue (SR-108) in a Subaru. He allegedly struck the back of a trailer traveling about 45 mph being pulled by a van about 9:10 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and the Modesto Bee.
The collision happened just south of Kiernan Avenue, police said.
The trailer broke free from the van during the collision. Meanwhile, the van continued traveling in a southwesterly direction before it went off the roadway and overturned.
Also, the Subaru went off the west side of the roadway and crashed into a utility pole. The pole was sheared off at the base, according to the CHP. Paramedics transported the Subaru driver to Doctors Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the man who died as Clavey Carlson.
Additionally, the driver of the van suffered minor injuries in the crash. Authorities identified the driver as 43-year-old Damien McGee.
Police are investigating whether or not speed was a factor in the crash.
Whether drugs or alcohol were a factor remains under investigation.
