Newhall Man, 34, Killed; Gary Sanchez Arrested on DUI Charges
NEWHALL, Calif. (May 29, 2024) — Clay Matthew Rodriguez, 34, of Newhall, died over the Memorial Day weekend in a crash on the Interstate 5 Freeway, just south of Calgrove Boulevard.
The traffic accident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Sunday, May 28th, according to the California Highway Patrol and The Signal.

CHP officers reported the victim was traveling as a passenger in a 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by Victoria Rodriguez, 33, of Newhall. The sedan was slowing down in traffic behind a semi-truck when it was hit by an alleged drunk driver.
Gary Palmas Sanchez, 30, apparently hit Rodriguez’s sedan and pushed it into the back of the truck,
Paramedics from the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and confirmed the death of the passenger in the Toyota identified as Clay Rodriguez.
They transported Victoria Rodriguez to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for treatment of major injuries.
Meanwhile, Gary Sanchez was taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries, but refused a blood test at the hospital. However, police requested a warrant from a judge on call at Los Angeles County Superior Court.
Sanchez was arrested after the blood test confirmed he was driving under the influence, according to CHP officials.
The suspect was taken to jail and held in lieu of $100,000 bail on suspicion of causing a DUI crash that resulted in injury.
