COSTA MESA, CA (September 9, 2020) – An elderly pedestrian killed after an alleged DUI hit-and-run crash at Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue Sunday has been identified.

The 72-year-old Cleusa Moraes Coffman, a resident of Newport Beach, died following the accident which occurred on September 6.

The incident began when Coffman was walking her Shitzu dog through a crosswalk in the intersection. At the same time, a 2014 silver Hyundai Sonata was traveling south on Irvine.

The California Highway Patrol said the driver, 31-year-old Ali Zohair Fakhreddine, then allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue.

Subsequently, the Riverside man struck Coffman. According to reports by KTLA News and CBS Los Angeles, the collision took place at about 6:34 a.m.

Paramedics responded and pronounced the woman and her dog, Bob, dead at the scene. Meanwhile, CHP affirmed that Fakhreddine did not stop to help the victims and fled southbound on Irvine.

Officers later located the Hyundai with damage to its right front and with Fakhreddine passed out inside. They determined that he was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time.

Authorities ultimately arrested Fakhreddine and charged him with one felony count of murder, one felony count of DUI causing injury, one felony count of hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury and one felony count of driving with a blood alcohol level of .08% or more causing bodily injury.

Records showed that the suspect has two prior DUI convictions. Meanwhile, loved ones created a GoFundMe page to help cover the funeral expenses of Coffman.
