LANDERS, California (June 30, 2017) — Clifford George Lopez, 21, of Yucca Valley and Samuel Hernandez, 52, of Desert Hot Springs have been identified as the driver and passenger respectively who were killed Wednesday morning in a collision on State Route 247, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff Coroner.
The crash took place about 4 a.m., just north of Alderman Road, the report said. Lopez was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer when his vehicle was struck head-on by a driver in a Dodge pickup truck.
Police say Douglas Barnes of Victorville was driving the pickup truck when he allegedly crossed over the double yellow lines and struck a Jeep. The Jeep spun around and went off the freeway where it caught on fire. The pickup went on to crash head-on into the Mitsubishi which was right behind the Jeep traveling in the opposite direction to the pickup truck.
The two victims died of their injuries at 4:27 a.m. and 4:28 a.m. Three people who were in the Jeep and Barnes survived the crash unharmed.
Police are investigating what caused the crash and whether charges will be filed against Barnes.
