COLTON, California (April 14, 2016) — The death of sixth-grader Dominick Gallegos following a soccer game and or bullying incident on campus at the Ulysses S. Grant Elementary School is under investigation by local police and sheriff’s departments.
The Colton Police Department and San Bernardino County Coroner’s office have reported the preliminary results show no signs of trauma that would have caused the 12-year-old boy’s death, but some witnesses believe the child was injured when he was bullied by another classmate during the game.
The child was rushed to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton after he collapsed and was unconscious at the school during a physical education class where witnesses say he was attacked by another classmate during a soccer game. He later died at the hospital due to unknown causes, but police were told by witnesses the boy had been “stomped and kicked in the stomach” after he allegedly fell on the ground during a soccer game. Witnesses say the child was shaken after the incident as well.
Adults at the school performed CPR on the boy, telling witnesses to leave the field.
Roughly 500 people attended a memorial for the boy on Wednesday night.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the Gallegos family to help them offset costs for the boy’s funeral.
“I can’t imagine the pain the family of this child are going through at this difficult time,” said Attorney James Johnson. “There is also conflicting information about the cause of his death which makes it even worse. A full investigation will hopefully determine what happened and give them some sort of closure.”
