Woman, 81, Fatally Injured by Wrong-Way DUI Driver
CORNING (October 30, 2017)- According to KRCRTV, a deadly DUI wrong-way crash took place Monday evening on the 5 freeway resulting in the death of an elderly woman and another woman’s arrest.
The incident was documented to have occurred at precisely 7:52 p.m. near Corning Road between two vehicles which included a 2018 Kia Optima and a second vehicle.
Per the press release, the driver of the unknown vehicle ID’d as Karen Rojas, 57, of Corning, has been traveling southbound within the northbound lanes of the 5 freeway when she slammed head-on with the Kia Optima driver only being ID’d as an 81-year-old woman.
The collision was devastating as it left both vehicles mangled with serious injuries leaving both women trapped inside.
Authorities confirmed that the 81-year-old woman was quickly rushed to Enloe Hospital to the trauma center, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries a short while after her admittance.
Meanwhile, Karen Rojas was rushed to St. Elizabeth Hospital before being transferred over to UC Davis Medical Center. She remains in serious condition as of Tuesday morning and will face serious charges which will be pending as soon as she is released from the hospital. The charges Rojas will face include DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
