CORONA: Man, 22, Killed, DUI Driver Arrested in 91 Freeway Crash
CORONA, California (July 28, 2014) – Daniel Gonzalez, 22, of Redlands was killed Saturday in an early morning rollover crash when he allegedly hit a suspected DUI driver on the 91 Freeway, according to a press release by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Coroner.
Gonzalez was driving a 1992 Honda on the northbound Interstate 15 freeway and attempting to enter the 91 freeway when the collision took place. He was ejected during the crash when his vehicle overturned onto the shoulder of the road about 3:30 a.m. His vehicle struck the top and front of a 1994 Acura and the driver and passenger of that vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Police say David Gutierrez-Zamora, 23, of Riverside, was heading eastbound on the 91 freeway when the car driven by Gonzalez hit his Acura. Police say Gutierrez-Zamora was found to be under the influence of alcohol and arrested at the scene.
“It appears as though this drunken driver was not at fault for this crash, but police tested him for alcohol and subsequently arrested him,” said Attorney James Johnson.
Police will continue to investigate this crash and issue a report determining liability.
