COSTA MESA, California (July 2, 2016) — A 53-year-0ld man believed to be a transient was struck and killed in a car accident early Saturday morning at Newport Boulevard at 17th Street, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.
He was identified in The Orange County Register as Patrick O’Gara.
Police say the crash took place about 2:55 a.m. this morning. The man was reported running westbound across Newport Boulevard at the time he was hit by a 1988 Cadillac El Dorado. The 36-year-old driver behind the wheel of the vehicle stopped to assist the injured pedestrian and police interviewed the person about what happened.
The pedestrian was allegedly running across the street and was not in a marked crosswalk. He died of his injuries at the scene of the crash. Witnesses may contact traffic investigator Darren Wood at 714-754-5264.
