Hit-and-run Suspect Andrew Leuvano, 25, of Santa Ana Arrested on Felony DUI, Hit-and-run Chrages

COSTA MESA, California (June 19, 2017) — A pedestrian was struck and seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver as he ran across the street in a crosswalk at Newport Boulevard and 19th Street, according to On Scene TV.

The crash took place near a local gas station about 2:15 a.m. on Sunday morning. Multiple witnesses at the scene spoke to authorities including one who said some vehicles were waiting for the young man to finish crossing the street, but the suspect driver did not see the victim. After the car impacted the pedestrian, the driver slowed down and stopped for a moment before driving off without stopping to call for help or assist the victim.

The Costa Mesa Fire Department responded to the scene and transported the victim by ambulance to a local hospital for emergency care.

Pamela Lozano witnessed the accident as she rode in an Uber, she called 911 and got the license plate of the suspect to help authorities arrest the hit-and-run driver at Dyer and the State Route 55 Costa Mesa Freeway.

“It’s better to take an Uber than take a life,” Lozano told an On Scene TV interviewer.

The Costa Mesa Police Department caught up with the suspect and is heading up the investigation and they suspect the driver may have been impaired. Andrew Jacob Luevano, 25 of Santa Ana was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and hit-and-run.

Pedestrian Hit-and-run Collisions

When a person is injured in a hit-and-run collision, it can be very painful both physically and emotionally. Not only is a person dealing with healing from injuries, but also the anger and sadness associated with the fact that someone could be so callous as to drive off and leave them without calling for help.

While there is no way to undo what has been done, there are legal remedies available to victims of this type of crime. For example, criminal charges such as felony hit-and-run may be brought against the driver as well as a separate civil lawsuit. The civil lawsuit can help a person obtain financial compensation. This is helpful as the person may have medical bills and need to take time off work during their recovery.

Without the representation of a lawyer, insurance companies might make contact with you directly, and since they are trained to protect their best interests, this could mean a loss of rights on your behalf, especially if you unknowingly sign something that they didn't completely explain to you.
