Bicyclist Kevin Wilson, 56, Victim in El Cajon Fatal Hit-and-Run on Dehesa Road
EL CAJON (January 22, 2020) – Authorities detained the alleged hit-and-run driver that killed a bicyclist along Dehesa Road near a golf course Monday.
Officers arrested Craig Wendell Nelson, 56, following the fatal accident which occurred on January 20 near the Singing Hills Golf Course.
The incident began when 56-year-old La Mesa resident Kevin Wilson was riding a bicycle in a bike lane of Dehesa Road.
California Highway Patrol said at the same time Nelson was driving a 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage eastbound. For an unknown reason, he then drifted into the bike lane.

According to reports by San Diego Union-Tribune and ABC 10 News, Nelson ultimately struck Wilson from behind. The crash occurred at about 10:45 a.m. in the Dehasa area.
Paramedics responded to the scene and found Wilson down on the ground and left suffering from life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision.
The rider was rushed to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego where he was later pronounced dead. Meanwhile, Nelson did not stop and drove to the east and south after hitting the victim.
Nelson reportedly exited his vehicle on Sloane Canyon Road and hid in the bushes. CHP soon located and arrested the Julian man on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.
Officials booked him into San Diego Central Jail with a bail set at $50,000. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call the CHP El Cajon area office at 619-401-2000.
